What does a doula do?
A doula helps you in the preparing for your birth, during your delivery in the recovery period after delivery. She supports you physically, emotionally and mentally. She is part of the birth team, but is not a replacement for your partner, midwife, maternity care or other medical staff, but rather to strengthen the team.
Inquire
A doula gives you additional information about the birth process. She can explore with you where your personal challenges lie and where your strength lies. She can discuss with you 1 on 1 what else you need information about and what is needed in your specific situation.
A doula gets to know you and possibly your birth partner well and can adjust the information you need to be well prepared for the birth. By preparing together for the birth and the maternity period, you can make conscious choices and have confidence in yourself and each other.
Help with your birth plan
A doula helps you design your birth plan so that your birth team and medical providers are aware of your wishes and needs. Together with you and possibly your (birth) partner, she also monitors the birth plan during your delivery.
Continuous guidance during your delivery
You can call your Doula very early during your delivery. Even with the first contractions. Together, you can make an appointment in advance if you want her to support you. A doula does her job without a medical function, but with full focus on making you as comfortable as possible during delivery.
Help with your maternity plan
A doula can help you draw up a maternity plan by asking questions about the things you don't think about. Everyone experiences the maternity week differently, a doula will come by during this maternity week to see how you are doing and whether extra support is needed during this period.
